VALERA THE DEPUTY
30 / 24 cm
Acrylic, fluorescent acrylic, luminescent acrylic
Against a bright pink background, which immediately establishes an ironic, almost pop-art tone, a pigeon is depicted wearing a human suit — complete with a tie and a flat cap. The image balances between caricature and symbol, deliberately avoiding any claim to “high” art and instead placing the viewer in the realm of satire.
Valera appears at once recognisably avian and absurdly “human” — he is not just a bird, but a social character stepping into the role of a politician. Embedded in this gesture is the idea of how easily roles can be adopted when they do not require real responsibility.
The narrative layer of the work unfolds through the artist’s story: Valera flies over Kyiv, observes how people live, and arrives at a kind of “realisation” that he too could become a deputy, because he is also capable, metaphorically, of “shitting on people.” This deliberately harsh expression functions as an artistic device, exposing a critique of political apathy and the emotional distance between those in power and society.
The work operates as a satirical commentary on urban and political reality — not aimed at specific individuals, but at the broader mechanism of detachment in which “role” becomes more important than substance. Here, the pigeon becomes a universal symbol: a creature that is simultaneously part of the urban landscape and a metaphor for a system that observes it without engagement.
Despite its humour and absurdity, the work leaves a lingering question: does anything truly change when roles change, or does everything remain the same regardless of who occupies them?
The work is presented in a handmade custom frame crafted from ash wood, plastered and finished with a pronounced surface texture. Inside, an integrated UV light strip enhances the transformation effect and activates the hidden layers of the composition.
